"The 13th Massachusetts
- Their Personal Stories"
The 13th Massachusetts Volunteers was a three-year
regiment of Volunteer soldiers from Boston and several surrounding
towns. Like many fellow Union Army regiments, they did hard service
with the Army of the Potomac and were heavily engaged at the battles
of 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg,
and Grant's Virginia Campaign. And like many fellow soldiers returning
from the war, the veterans formed their own "13th Mass. Association,"
which sponsored annual reunion dinners. The Association published
an annual Circular, which lasted more than 30 years, containing
articles and reminiscences of their service together.
This month's speaker is our own new member, Bradley Forbush. What
makes this presentation special is that Brad's great-great grandfather
was with the 13th Massachusetts Volunteers for a year and a half
before transferring to the 3rd U.S. Artillery. Brad is proud to
have his
ancestor's diary of 1863 when he was with the Artillery. He also
has photos of the 13th Mass. at Williamsport, Maryland in 1962.
He became interested in his ancestor's war service, and has been
researching the regiment for the past two years.
Brad has worked in the animation industry for 11 years. He resides
in Burbank with his wife and two dogs, who have no interest in
the Civil War hence, he joined our Round Table this year.
With photographs, maps and personal accounts of the soldiers,
Brad will present the history and character of this fighting regiment.
Some points that will be covered are: what happened to the John
Brown Bell at Harper's Ferry?; what is 4th Battalion Fever and
how was it cured?; and most importantly, what did the men think
of their hats? There will also be stories of brave soldiers, shirkers,
Libby Prison, and a horrendous tale of Carver Hospital in Washington
D.C.
Please join us as Brad Forbush tells us more about the personal
stories of this regiment.
