SEPTEMBER 22ND MEETING:

"Shirks, Bummers, Camp Followers and Other Characters
of the 13th Massachusetts"

In the writings of the regimental history of the 13th Massachusetts, the names of heroic soldiers were purposely omitted through fear of forgetting others who were equally deserving. The authors wrote that brave men were as plenty as huckleberries. But with over 1,000 men in the regiment from all walks of life, it was inevitable that there would be a few less than perfect soldiers.

This month's presentation will take a more light-hearted look at some of the characters that belonged to the 13th Mass.

We'll hear the stories of two former slaves who crossed the Potomac to seek freedom and employment in the camp of the 13th Mass. Dr. Whitney employed the mischievous 'Stake,' who constantly played pranks on him (and our speaker has a photo of the two from his ancestor's collection). 'George Washington' had more heroic aspirations and joined the Union Cavalry once the government approved the enlistment of black soldiers.

We'll hear the tale of 'Old Corporal,' who was a four-legged canine recruit, and of 'Jack' the 'sea-dog,' whose tattoo business brightened up the ranks with his colorful artwork. And we'll even hear about some less than perfect officers.

For the last four years our member, Brad Forbush, has regaled us with an annual program about his ancestor's regiment, the 13th Mass. This "epilogue" will fill out the human interest stories we've become so fascinated with. Brad has been working in the animation industry since 1990, most recently on the animated show 'King of the Hill.' He lives in Burbank with his wife Susan, who graciously tolerates his research. Their dog Penny is particularly interested in the story about 'Old Corporal.'

Please join us as we hear the wrap-up of stories about our favorite Civil War regiment.
