Dixie Manor was the only facility for aged Confederate soldiers in the far west. It was established and maintained by the California Division United Daughters of the Confederacy.
During its peak years on Clarence Avenue in San Gabriel, it averaged 50 visitors per month from nearly every state in the union. The story of the veterans who lived at Dixie Manor and the women who made it possible will be the topic of our presentation this month.
Our speaker, Connie Moretti, had three great grandfathers who were involved in the War Between the States. After retiring from teaching school, she was able to devote more time to both the United Daughters of the Confederacy and to research. Currently serving as Historian General of UDC, Connie is past president and past historian of the California Division. She also serves as President of the General Joe Wheeler Chapter in Long Beach. Connie is the author of the book "Dixie Manor Days," written as a fundraiser for the California Chapter of the UDC. She has kindly offered to bring her few remaining copies to the meeting to sell and autograph for interested members. She is also a co-author of "Brigadier General Tyree H. Bell, C.S.A.: Forrest's Fighting Lieutenant," published last year by the University of Tennessee Press. In the "real world" Connie works as a professional genealogist.
Join us as we explore this site of post war history in our own San Gabriel Valley.
