JUNE 26TH MEETING:

“Californians in the War:

The Cal Hundred and Cal Battalion”

Many students of the Civil War are unaware of the contribution made by a number of dedicated and patriotic Californians. Committed to the Union cause, they journeyed to the east coast to assist in the war effort. The 500 men in two detachments, dubbed the Cal Hundred and the Cal Battalion, fought together under the flag of Massachusetts in the U.S. Cavalry. They amassed an admirable service record ranging from face-to-face shootouts with John S. Mosby to the Confederate surrender at Appomattox.

This month’s speaker is one of our new members, Mike Sorenson. He will tell the amazing story of their service, and of the men themselves. Mr. Sorenson is a resident of Chino Hills, and is a building contractor by profession. He is married with four children and has been an avid collector and student of the Civil War for many years.

Items from his holdings have been exhibited periodically in Southern California. This lecture will provide a rare opportunity for personal contact with the Californians and their story.

Come join us as we learn more about the Civil War participation of our own Californian soldiers.
