What is one of the first things you need to do when starting a new government? Well, developing your own currency would probably be toward the top of the list. This was the challenge which faced the fledgling Confederate States of America at the start of the Civil War.
Our speaker this month is David Schnorr, a collector and dealer in Confederate currency. He will be providing us with a primer overview into the money that was used in the South during the Civil War, as well as sharing from his collection various examples that would have circulated during that period. His talk will cover CSA Government issue notes (1861-1864), Southern State Government issue notes and Southern Bank issue banknotes. He will also be bringing several examples of Federally issued banknotes for comparison.
Dave can remember starting his life-long interest in historical collecting at the age of five. An interest in the Civil War developed in his early teens. He started collecting several pieces of CSA currency, since they were one thing he could afford. While he did receive a degree in History, with a minor in Anthropology, his career path took him into the food business. He is currently president of the Quinoa Corporation, where he has worked for the last 16 years. His company imports and markets allergy free and natural food products nationally.
Come join us as we learn more about the art of Confederate currency.
