How did the Federal and Rebel Post Office Departments function under the strains and demands encountered during the War?
This presentation will discuss the major political figures involved, the day-to-day operations of the post offices, and the extraordinary operations and provisions necessary to maintain communications and morale of their citizenry. Similarities and differences with our contemporary postal system experiences will be noted. Numerous timelines and illustrations will support and clarify the discussion. Rebel postal items will be on display to provide the audience with visual, historical examples of the evolution and challenges experienced by the southern post office in executing its mission.
This month's speaker is Dave Goracke, a member of the West San Fernando Valley Civil War Round Table, and a retired aerospace engineering manager. Mr. Goracke grew up in Falls Church, Virginia and currently resides in West Hills. Geographical proximity to northern Virginia battlefields sparked his interest in the War's history as a youngster.
